RC Pikeville Official District Governor Visit

The visit to RC Pikeville began the evening before the visit with the club on August 7 with dinner hosted by club President Gerrie Clark and David and followed by Rotarian Reed Potter’s guided tour of historic sites in Pikeville associated with the Hatfield-McCoy feud. RC Pikeville is a well known community presence through the many service projects it undertakes, several of them in support of other community charitable organizations and among them their International Dinner. At the club meeting President Gerrie announced their magnificent effort of providing over 1000 pairs of shoes for the Shoes for Orphan Souls project being undertaken in our district.

Gerrie Clark – Pikeville Rotary Club’s 91st president

On Thursday, June 27, Gerrie Clark, a Vice President and Trust Officer for Community Trust Bank, became the 91^st president of the Pikeville Rotary Club, following the tenure of outgoing president Howard V. Roberts.

Gerrie, who became a Rotarian in 2004, has been a very active club member.  She served as Past District Governor Rakesh Sachdeva’s assistant in 2009.  She has also been a board member and has chaired many of the club’s fundraising activities and other   events over the years.  Gerrie brings experience and a vibrant “can do” attitude to the club and its 103 members.  “Hopefully, I will be able to lead the club in a forward way, grow our numbers and be a positive role model for the Rotary ideal”, says Gerrie.  “It is important to embrace the ethics and powerful message of Rotary, which is encompassed in its 2013-14 motto ‘Engage Rotary, Change Lives’”.

Joining Gerrie as officers for 2013-14 are President Elect Darrell Maynard, President Nominee Eva Hinkle, Immediate Past President Howard Roberts, Secretary Karen Roberts Prater, Treasurer Julie Boyd, and Sergeant-at-Arms Rick Newsom. 

The Board of Directors includes Regina Compton, Brent Lee,  David Lester, David Smith, Dan Stratton and John Yagodich.  Major Committee Chairs are Darrell Maynard (Administration), Eva Hinkle (Membership), Pamela Howard (Projects), Jeanne W. Clark (Public Relations), Carrie Cinnamond Rose (The Rotary Foundation), and Frank Dawahare and James Glass (Youth Service).

Gerrie, who has been in banking for 30 years, joined Community Trust and Investment Company  in 2011.  Her area of expertise is in wealth and trust management.  She holds the designation of Registered Paraplanner from the College for Financial Planning.

A strong community advocate, Gerrie also serves on the board of directors of Jenny Wiley Theater, the Appalachian SPCA, and the Coats for Kids Foundation.  In the past, she has served on the SouthEast Kentucky Chamber Board of Directors and, for the last two years, has participated in Relay for Life’s Celebrity Waiter event.

In her spare time, Gerrie enjoys hobbies that include photography, floral designing and crafting.  She is married to David Clark who is a Joint Commission Specialist of Standards and Interpretations at Pikeville Medical Center.

2011-2012 Presidential Citations awarded at District Conference

PDG John Adams caught up on a little unfinished business and awarded Presidential Citations to RC Pikeville and RC Florence for the Rotary year 2011 - 2012. Calculations were adjusted by RI after the 2012 District Conference, confirming that both clubs had been eligible for the Presidential Citation.

RC Pikeville enjoys a day at Keeneland

Keeneland Race Course in Lexington was the site of a recent social event for over fifty members and guests of the Pikeville Rotary Club.  The group experienced beautiful spring weather on Saturday, April 6 as they enjoyed a day of racing from the Kentucky Room at Keeneland.  Thousands of visitors turned out to participate in one of the rituals of spring in the Bluegrass – a day at the track.

Pikeville Rotary Youth Club Receives Awards

PIKEVILLE ROTARY YOUTH CLUB RECEIVES AWARDS

Pikeville Rotary Club recently successfully completed their 10 years of Interact sponsorship. The club enrolls high school students from Pike County and Pikeville city to engage in various service projects. The goal of the program is to encourage leadership in our youth while instilling local and international community service.

The following students participated in the program this year: Esha Narola, Henna Chandel, Rachel Hazelett, Dalton Stanley, Breanna Blackburn, Hunter Heffington, Iman Ali, Noor Ali, Keeley Williams, Krishna Ammisetty, Micah Heffington, Patrick Cordero, Pranay Patel, Vianna Le, Wendi Smith, Beniah Stumph, Olivia Lane, Cailee Marcum, Cameron Wright, Rachel Smith, Elizabeth Johnson, Holly Hamilton, Haleigh Harris, Kaitlin Mosley, Mason Johnson, Elisha Caudill, Sarah Caudill, Paige Werner.

Esha Narola served as the president, Iman Ali as vice president, Henna Chandel as the secretary, Noor Ali and Rachel Smith as the school coordinators.

Local community service projects included volunteering at the UPike Homecoming, Safe Halloween for children sponsored by the YMCA, Coats for Kids program, the Pikeville Rotary Club Pancake Day and International Dinner.  The club also collected about 500 cans for Westcare, the local homeless shelter.

International service projects included collecting and donating 150 used eyeglasses to the Indian Red Cross and 400 textbooks for various third world countries.

They also participated in Rotary educational activities.

Esha Narola, Rachel Hazelett, and Henna Chandel were awarded the Outstanding Service Awards by Howard Roberts, President of the Pikeville Rotary Club, while Dalton Stanley, Wendi Smith Iman Ali, Noor Ali, Patrick Cordero, and Pranay Patel received Community Service Awards.

The program is coordinated by Dr Seema Sachdeva of Pikeville Rotary Club. All local high school students are encouraged to join and they can get program application in fall from their school counselors.

GSE Team visits RC Pikeville

Rotary GSE Team from Grenoble, France visits area

 A Group Study Exchange Team from Rotary District 1780 in Grenoble, France recently visited the Pikeville area.  The five member team, sponsored by Rotary District 6740 which covers 42 counties in eastern Kentucky, arrived in Pikeville on May 8, just after their visit to the Ashland area.  Their three day stay in Pikeville was a busy cultural experience.  By the end of their month-long visit to Kentucky, the team will have traveled to Lexington, Northern Kentucky, Maysville, Ashland, Whitesburg, Somerset and London.

 The GSE team leader Yann de Sereville, a Rotarian of just four years, lives in a small town near world famous Mont Blanc in the Alps.  A banker by profession, Yann is an avid outdoorsman who loves to ski, bike and trek in the mountains.  Yann shared, “ I always said that one day I would go to America and discover this wild and beautiful place and here I am.  The Pikeville Rotarians have been very gracious and the hospitality of the people in this area has been wonderful.”

 Other team members included Augustin Reboul (a graphic designer), David Bartet (a financial controller), Celine Lemoine (a hair stylist) and Yann Mercier (an industrial chemist).  All of these participants were from the Grenoble area.

 Several Rotarians and their families opened their homes to the French team.  Those included Dan and Muriel Stratton, James and Helen Brown, Gerri and Ken Kinder, Frank and Theresa Dawahare, Jeanne and Kenneth Clark.

During their stay in Pikeville, the French team enjoyed several activities.  They experienced a coal mining tour with their guide Rusty Justice from Jigsaw Enterprises, a city tour with historian Reed Potter,  a visit to the Breaks Interstate Park for a picnic and hike with Jeanne Clark, a dinner at Hibachi with Rotary officers and board members, a bourbon tasting at the home of Frank and Theresa Dawahare, and a farewell reception at Green Meadow Country Club, where the team members presented a program on their lives and home towns in France.

 Because part of the GSE experience involves a sharing of vocational interests, team members were matched with local business leaders in similar vocations.  Team members visited Community Trust Bank, the YMCA, McCoy Motorsports, UPike, Summit Engineering, Glam Salon and Spa and East Ky. Beauty College.  A special thank you to the following people who welcomed the team members to their businesses:  Sherry Riddle, Brett Keene, Mike McCoy, Hugh B. Hall, Dr. Ben Clayton, Philip Elswick, David Rasnick, Phyllis Deskins and Sandra Akers.   The team traveled throughout the area in a van provided by the UK Extension Office.

The Pikeville Rotary Club has been a proud sponsor of Group Study Exchange Teams from around the world for years.  This was the last year for the Rotary International GSE program in its current form. Beginning July 1, 2013, the new exchange visits will involve a more vocational perspective.

RC Pikeville hosts Speech Contest

The Pikeville Rotary Club is pleased to announce that it has, once again, sponsored a speech contest for area students.  The contest offers high school students an opportunity to speak on a meaningful topic, to sharpen their speaking skills, and to gain recognition in addition to monetary rewards.  The Pikeville Rotary Club hopes that students who participate will learn about the mission of Rotary International as well as the humanitarian service and other projects of the local club.  Students, through their research,  are also exposed to a potential future relationship with Rotary through Interact, Rotaract or one of the youth-oriented programs like Youth Exchange.

This year’s winners proved to be very talented public speakers.  First place honors went to Eashwar Soma from Belfry High School, second place to Patrick Cordero from Pikeville High School, and third place to Haley Taylor from East Ridge High School.  These students were presented trophies by Pikeville Rotary Club President Howard Roberts,  as well as cash prizes of$200, $100 and $50 respectively.

All area high school students (freshman through senior) from both private and public high schools as well as home-schooled students were eligible.   High school guidance counselors distributed information and applications about the speech contest about two months before the contest.

Students were expected to do research on the topic “Peace Through Service”, this year’s Rotary International motto.  Participants were allowed to consult teachers, parents, or others about the content of their speeches.  Following the rules set forth by the Rotary Club, students had to deliver a 5 – 8 minute speech without notes.  They were judged on the basis of delivery, originality and content.

This year’s esteemed judges were Dr. David Smith (UPike professor), Brandon Roberts (Pike Co. Media Specialist), Christie Billiter Spears (Pikeville City Clerk), Dr. Brigitte LaPresto (UPike professor) and Rosalind Stanley   (Public Information Officer with the Pike County School System).  The speech contest was organized by Rotarians Al Greenfield and Jeanne Clark.

The three winning speeches will be delivered by the students at the May 1 regularly scheduled meeting of the Pikeville Rotary Club, which will be held at the EXPO Center in Pikeville.

President David Hellmich of the RC Lexington Sunrise gave DG Kathryn Hardman the honor of assisting in the induction of four new members during the official visit on August 28. The membership drive was assisted by a successful after-hours social event hosted by the club earlier in the month.

RC Pikeville volunteers for Remote Area Medical Clinic

The Pikeville Rotary Club participated in the Remote Area Medical Event held at Pike County Central High School on June 9 and 10 by providing and serving food for all the volunteers and any patient who chose to eat. Approximately 400 volunteers workers were fed along with over 200 patients. 

RC Pikeville hosts International Dinner

The Pikeville Rotary Club held their annual International Dinner on Friday evening June 1, 2012 at the East Kentucky Exposition Center in conjunction with the Pikeville Main Street Program.  Entertainment was provided by the local band “Big Iron” featuring a variety of music.  Sandy Johnson was the event chairperson for the 2012 event.  This was the 7^th year for the event.  The first year 4 countries were represented; this year food from several countries was available to include:  Syria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, India, Japan, China, Mexico, and the United States.  The most talked about food of the evening was the “Hillbilly” cuisine; which included soup beans, corn bread and all the fixins’.  The dinner had over 300 attendees and raised approximately $8,000 for various club projects.

KYCOM Rotaract chartered by Pikeville Rotary Club

A few months ago, two first-year students from the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine expressed interest in forming a Rotaract club at the college. Lisa Adams and Joseph Lewis, both first-year med students, had been active members in Rotaract clubs at their respective undergrad colleges. They recognized, first hand, the value of this program affiliated with Rotary International.

Open to all students at the medical school, the KYCOM Rotaract club boasts a membership of 36 first-year medical students. These students seek to serve the needs of their communities, widen their personal and professional contacts and increase their understanding of the world.

Pikeville Rotary Club President Jeanne Clark commented, “The Pikeville Rotary Club is thrilled to sponsor the KYCOM Rotaract club and is looking forward to partnering with these energetic young people as they look to serve their community and the world. With their new president Lisa Adams and VP Joseph Lewis at the helm, I am sure that the Rotaract membership will grow in numbers and be a force for positive change in our community and internationally.”

RC Pikeville inducts new members

On Wednesday, March 14, the Pikeville Rotary inducted two new members. Lance Rose, one of our youngest members, is a partner in the local construction firm Rose Builders in Pikeville. His business specializes in commercial construction with “perfection being their ultimate goal”.

Debbie Freeman, another young business entrepreneur, is the co-owner of Saving Grace in Pikeville. This local business offers a full range of projects and services designed to restore the self-confidence of cancer survivors.

Both Lance and Debbie have been regularly been attending meetings for several months and are both anxious to be part of the Pikeville club.

President Jeanne Clark, welcoming the two new members, noted, “As new members, you will get a chance to become more involved in your community and to provide aid to other parts of the world through the opportunities that your Rotary club and Rotary International offer. We are excited to have you as new members.”

With the induction of Lance and Debbie, the Pikeville Rotary grows to 106 members strong!

RC Pikeville recognizes Paul Harris Society member

On January 25, long-time Rotarian Dr. Mary Wiss was recognized by the Pikeville Rotary Club for her continued support of the Paul Harris Society. “Sis” as she is fondly called by her friends and Rotarians was presented with a gold Paul Harris Society pin with 3 sapphires by Past District Governor Carrie Cinnamond Rose.

The Paul Harris Society is named after the founder of Rotary International. The society recognizes friends of The Rotary Foundation who annually contribute US$1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, and other approved Foundation grant activities. Those Rotarians who give at the level of $4 - 5,000 are acknowledged with a special pin with inset sapphires.

Generous gifts like those of Dr. Wiss advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Contributions support activities such as:

• Vocational and on-the-job training for land mine victims in Cambodia

• Hand-washing stations, training for teachers, and in-depth hygiene training for students at a school in Ecuador

• A scholarship for a Japanese student to study effective adult learning methods abroad

• Milking cows for farmers in Russia

• Microcredit loans to women in Togo

• Reading and mathematics textbooks for students in the United States of America

The Pikeville Rotary Club is proud to acknowledge Sis Wiss, a dedicated Rotarian since 1988, for her continued support of the Paul Harris Society and all the humanitarian work it represents.

RC Pikeville presents scholarship funds

Pikeville Rotary Club President Jeanne Clark recently presented UPike VP of Development (and Rotarian) Eric Becher with a $1,000 check for the Rotary/ Rediford Damron Endowment Scholarship Fund. The club has support this endowment for many years in memory of Rediford Damron who was the Dean at Pikeville College. Rediford was the Pikeville club president in 1969-80 and the district governor in 1985-86.

The Pikeville Rotary Club once again held a profitable Pancake Day on Dec. 2. Over 800 folks were served hot pancakes and sausage at the East Kentucky EXPO Center. The largest crowd ever helped the club make $6500 for local projects.

DG visit to Pikeville

The Pikeville Rotary Club was pleased to welcome District Governor John Adams (Somerset-Pulaski Rotary Club) to its Board meeting and to the regular weekly meeting on Dec. 9. John has been a Rotarian since 1999. He has headed up multiple committees for that club, serving as its president in 2006-07. On the district level, John has been an aide to PDG Tom Ashford, a two term assistant governor, the grants sub-chair and, in 2008, he was awarded the District Governor’s Citation for Service. John has attended five international conventions, is a multilevel Paul Harris Fellow and is a member of the Paul Harris Society.

John’s message to members included congratulating the club on its growth in new members, its continued support of the PolioPlus drive, and the effective leadership of its officers and board. He urged the club to continue its efforts in the area of public relations, noting that most communities are not fully aware of the important work done by their local Rotary clubs. He also stressed the importance of each member’s participation in The Rotary Foundation, reminding us that the Presidential Award is contingent upon 100% support of TRF by the club’s membership.

The DG is married to Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow Christie Champlin Adams and they are the proud parents of Charlie, who is almost two. John is a partner in the Adams and Venters law firm in Somerset. He is also a member and session elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Somerset.

At the conclusion of the program, President Jeanne Clark, on behalf of the club, presented John with an inscribed desk clock for his continued leadership as district governor.
