Rotary Reflections - August, 2013

August is Membership and Extension month in our Rotary world. What should that mean to us as members of Rotary clubs in District 6740? Should we think about proposing a new member for our Rotary club? How would we do that? Well, we could think about folks we know in our community with whom we have some relationship either in our work or personal lives who we believe would make good Rotarians. We might even find out who runs a reputable business in our community or seek out a community leader that we may not know. This may be the most difficult step. Often the first step is the hardest to take. They might not know about what Rotary is and what your Rotary club does. If you take the time to meet them and get to know them and tell them about Rotary you may have a very good new member prospect. And then if you propose them and they are accepted into your club you will have shared Rotary.

Rotarian George Rassenfoss celebrates 96th birthday!

George Rassenfoss celebrated his 96^th Birthday recently at the Paris Rotary Club meeting. George was honored with a special “Rotary Cake” to celebrate his 96^th birthday on Wednesday January 8, 2013. A long time Rotarian, George had over 60 years of perfect attendance at Rotary’s weekly meetings. When asked what keeps him active in Rotary, George always responds that he enjoys the programs (each week the Club has a featured speaker) and the fellowship. George is the Club’s Sergeant at Arms Emeritus and regularly invokes the meeting’s opening prayer. The Club’s annual Attendance Award is named in George’s honor. George’s daughters, Bridget and Marthy, attended the meeting and shared in the surprise birthday celebration. Happy Birthday George!!!!!

RC Somerset welcomes new member and serves community

The Noon Rotary Club is pleased to announce our newest member Amy Stroud. Amy was inducted Monday, Nov 26, 2012. Amy’s sponsoring rotarian was Mike Tarter. She is the digital media market person for Forcht Broadcasting in Somerset. Welcome Amy!

On Saturday 12/15 beginning at 11:00 the annual Wreaths Across America event was held at our Mill Springs National Memorial Cemetery in Nancy KY. Rotarians were on hand to prepare hot coffee, cider and other refreshments. Dr B.J. Parson spearheads this event each year for our club. Among the many veterans present, some from WWII, a large representation of our local school’s JRROTC members were present for the ceremony. Also in attendance were the Boy Scouts and Somerset Explorers. Wreaths Across America is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies on a specified Saturday in December at Arlington VA, as well as veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. Somerset Rotary is proud to participate in events remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms. This week of events is made possible by thousands of volunteers who organize local ceremonies, raise funds to sponsor wreaths, and participate in the events. We receive no government funding. The cost of their programs is paid by individual wreaths sponsors, corporate donors and volunteer truckers.

DG Hardman visits RC Carlisle

DG Kathryn Hardman presented Past District Governor Leon Riggs with a pin commemorating his 50 years as a Rotarian. PDG Leon Riggs also accepted a 50 year pin on behalf of his good friend and colleague Bill Sparks who was unable to attend due to the happy news that his wife Carol was well enough to return home following her accident.

RC Ashland inducts 90th member!

Congratulations RC Whitesburg - 12 new members this year!

Congratulations to Rotary Club of Whitesburg for adding 12 new members in one Rotary Year, 2011-2012!

Rotary Club of Whitesburg set a goal of adding 10 new members this year, and instead, added 12! The three newest members are David Narramore, a local dentist, Lennie Darrell Holbrook, Secretary of the Veterans Museum, and Shad Baker, County Extension Agent. Narramore and Holbrook became members on May 1, 2012, and both were sponsored by President Margaret Hammonds. Baker became a member on June 19, 2012. Five of the 12 new members were sponsored by President Margaret Hammonds, Membership Chair Barbara Ison added 2, new member Debbie Watts added 1, new member Brenda DePriest added 1, Josephine Richardson added 1, and Administration Committee Chair Jack Burkich added 2.

RC Ashland welcomes new members

This spring, RC Ashland welcomed nine new members. Welcome new Rotarians Honoree Courage, Deb Fazenbaker, James Howard, Stevi Kibbie, Shaun Kiser, Alice Martin, Erica Myers, Ryan Reames, and Kathy Thorner

RC Pikeville inducts new members

On Wednesday, March 14, the Pikeville Rotary inducted two new members. Lance Rose, one of our youngest members, is a partner in the local construction firm Rose Builders in Pikeville. His business specializes in commercial construction with “perfection being their ultimate goal”.

Debbie Freeman, another young business entrepreneur, is the co-owner of Saving Grace in Pikeville. This local business offers a full range of projects and services designed to restore the self-confidence of cancer survivors.

Both Lance and Debbie have been regularly been attending meetings for several months and are both anxious to be part of the Pikeville club.

President Jeanne Clark, welcoming the two new members, noted, “As new members, you will get a chance to become more involved in your community and to provide aid to other parts of the world through the opportunities that your Rotary club and Rotary International offer. We are excited to have you as new members.”

With the induction of Lance and Debbie, the Pikeville Rotary grows to 106 members strong!

RC Paris Celebrates A Birthday and Serves the Community

Paris Rotarian George Rassenfoss recently celebrated his 95^th birthday at his weekly Rotary Club meeting. A long time Rotarian, George has had over 60 years of perfect attendance. At the weekly meetings, song leader John Galloway recognizes the birthdays of Club members and leads the Club in rousing renditions of “Happy Birthday.” 

G. Davis Wilson was the featured speaker on January 11. He discussed his role as Bourbon County Attorney and discussed the duties of his office. According to G. Davis, over 3,000 felonies and misdemeanors occurred in the County over the past year, with 90 to 95% of the offenses related to drugs and drug abuse. Illegal drugs and pills are a growing problem in the County as well as an increase in crimes by juveniles. Additionally, police recently discovered the

 first “meth lab” in Bourbon County and will be prosecuting the case.

The Paris Rotary Club supports the Operation Backpack that provides food for disadvantaged children. Rotarians volunteers once a month to work the program, packing over 250 backpacks per week. The club also contributes $2000 of financial support to the service project.

Paris Rotary Club's "Coats, Jackets & Blankets Drive" was a great success as over 300 items were donated by Rotarians and from the Community. Pictured are Rotarians Bill T. McConnell, President Ethel Welsh and Tom Brannock. These items were delivered to the First Christian Church where they will be distributed to the Community.

RC Whitesburg welcomes new members

The Rotary Club of Whitesburg is pleased to announce the installation of two new members for the 2011-12 Rotary Year. Sherry Wright, Coordinator of Federal Programs, Professional Development and Special Education Programs for Jenkins Independent Schools; and Eileen Sanders, member of the Jenkins Board of Education were officially installed by Rotarian Barbara Ison on Tuesday, December 6th. Sherry Wright was sponsored by Rotarian Deborah Watts and Eileen Sanders was sponsored by Rotarian Brenda DePriest. New members were presented with membership certificates and pins during the installation ceremony. From L to R: Sherry Wright, Eileen Sanders and Barbara Ison. This made a total of 8 new members inducted into the Rotary Club of Whitesburg since July 1, 2011.

RC Winchester

RC Winchester hosted the Leadership Winchester class at the club meeting on 12/16/11. Sounds like a very interesting program!

RC Campbell County welcomes a new member

Greg Young, a manager with Heritage Bank, is sworn in as the newest member of the Campbell County Rotary by Rotary President Arnd Rehfuss. The Campbell County Rotary Club meets each Wednesday at noon at the Highland Country Club in Ft. Thomas. The service club contributes regularly to community events and service projects. Welcome Greg!
