RC Somerset hosts CEO of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital

Mark Brenzel presented to the Rotary Club of Somerset, discussing the recent changes to the healthcare system as a result of the Healthcare Affordability Act. RC Somerset-Pulaski and RC Somerset partner to benefit students

Club Presidents Ben Robertson and George Corder spoke to a group of over 200 students during the Access to Careers event held at Somerset Community College on Nov 14. The select group of students from the 4 local high schools toured the facilities of SCC and received information on classes offered, scholarship moneys and financial aid that is available. Each year both the Somerset Pulaski Morning Rotary Club and Somerset Rotary Club give scholarships to Somerset, Pulaski and Southwestern high school students based on high ethical standards and submitted essays.

RC Somerset welcomes Pulaski County School Superintendant

Rotarian BJ Parson introduced Pulaski County Schools Superintendent Steve Butcher as his program August 13th. Mr. Butcher spoke about the new school year, enrollment numbers, building projects, transportation, changes in food services, budgets and funding of the county system. Notably, county school buses travel over 7,000 miles per day because Pulaski County is the 3rd largest county in the state in land mass. He also explained that schools have been mandated by the federal government to offer more fruits and vegetables, eliminate butter and use only 1% or skim milk. Mr. Butcher summarized the changes as “Less meat, less sweet.” After recent budget cuts, the annual budget for the system comes in around $68 million dollars. RC Somerset presents perfect attendance awards and explores "What's in your Bucket?"

Bruce Singleton asked members of the Rotary Club of Somerset “What’s in your bucket”? In other words, what is something you always wanted to do, but haven’t done. Bruce added “And wouldn’t it be cool if this time next year you can say you did it?”
Mr. Singleton has practiced law in Somerset for 35 years, acted in local plays, covered Somerset High School football games for Clear Channel Radio, and has written two novels and a nonfiction work known as “I Wouldn’t Lie To You…I’m A Lawyer”. He continues to add to his personal bucket list by teaching Greek at Somerset Christian Academy and will be a contributing sportswriter for the Commonwealth-Journal this fall.
We appreciate Mr. Singleton’s inspirational visit and thank Rotarian Gene Palmer for serving as host.

John and Christie Adams hosted the members of RC Somerset and RC Somerset-Pulaski County as both clubs installed new officers in June, 2012.

Congratulations to Past President Wendell Lyon for a successful year as the Somerset Noon Rotary Club’s leader 2011-2012. Wendell left the club in a great position for transition to our new Club President, George Corder.

Congratulations to Ben Robertson, inducted as Somerset Morning Club President. Ben succeeds Past President Lisa Mullins.

During the evening, John Adams was also recognized for his great job serving as our District Governor.

RC Somerset inspires Rotarians with guest speakers

Recently, RC Somerset was honored to present a speaker from the Danville Advocate, Mr Larry Vaught. Larry is a UK sportswriter and knows most all things related to UK athletics. Among his accolades, Larry was named the 2011 National Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. This is the sixth consecutive year he has received the award, and seventh in the last nine years. Larry spoke on the successful UK basketball season, both past, present and future as well as some views on the pigskin season. Larry writes daily on his blog at vaughtsviews.com for the Danville Advocate Messenger, check it out. Larry was the guest of Marvin Kinch.

Jack Keeney, the new Interim Director of God’s Food Pantry, recently spoke to the noon Rotary Club. Mr. Keeney thanked everyone who had donated to God’s Food Pantry in the past and encouraged anyone interested in donating to please do so. He stated that the food bank is at the lowest it has been in nine years. God’s Food Pantry is located at 119 South Central Ave in downtown Somerset. RC Somerset - Wreaths Across America

The Rotary Club of Somerset joined with other volunteers to organize our local Wreaths Across America tribute on Saturday, December 10. Wreaths were placed in memory of those who have served or in honor of those currently serving in the Army, Navy, Marine Corp, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. An additional wreath was placed for those Missing In Action and/or Prisoners Of War. For additional information see www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Somerset Community College welcomed students to campus

for annual Rotary Access to Careers day

Surrounded by dozens of empty pizza boxes, Rotarians Rusty Butler (Somerset), Tiffany Bourne (Somerset-Pulaski) and Dr. BJ Parson (Somerset) are shown (front) with Somerset Community College Recruiters Sean Ayers and Ken Upchurch (back). The Rotary Clubs sponsored the annual Rotary Day event and provided lunch for nearly 200 area students. High school students from Pulaski County High, Somerset High, Southwestern High and Somerset Christian School were given tours of SCC and provided with information on applying, financial aid, scholarships and more during the event, which was held on November 16. Somerset Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education. SCC has campuses in Somerset and London, and centers in Clinton, McCreary, Casey, and Russell counties.
