RC Lexington hosts UK's International Students

On Sunday August 18th the Rotary Club of Lexington and the University of Kentucky’s International Hospitality Program co-hosted a picnic for international students entering UK this fall. The picnic, which has been taking place since 1968, was held on UK’s campus at the E.S. Good Barn. Students from 24 different countries attended the picnic along with their host families. Included in the picnic fare were “All American” hamburgers with all the toppings, corn on the cob, and chocolate chip cookies, which appeared to be a big hit with the crowd! Door prizes consisting of Rotary merchandise were given to those students who traveled the longest, spoke the most languages, visited the most continents, and lived closest to the equator.  Good times were had by everyone and the students really appreciated Rotary’s outreach and hospitality.

District Governor’s Letter to the District

 

Dear Rotarians of District 6740,

I am honored and humbled to be your District Governor . I follow in the path of governors who have lived Rotary’s motto and served with distinction and set a high standard. I have been especially appreciative of the relationship Past District Governor John Adams, Immediate Past District Governor Kathryn Hardman, District Governor Elect John Salyers and I have had over the last couple of years as we have worked together on the various aspects of Rotary to strengthen the Rotary clubs in our district, expand service in the name of Rotary and develop future Rotary leaders. I am inspired by the Rotarians and Rotary clubs who have modeled the way of Rotary in my 34 years as a Rotarian.

In January of this year, my wife, Kay and I met RI President Ron Burton and his wife Jetta at the International Assembly training for District Governors from around the world. There, President Ron announced his theme for the 2013-14 Rotary year  Engage Rotary, Change Lives. That theme speaks to me as a Rotarian. In many ways it is a call to action for all us Rotarians. Engagement means making a connection and becoming involved. I learned that early after being a Rotarian for only a month and a half and being made co-chair for a new fundraising project for my then Rotary club in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. President Ron Burton claims that when “you make the decision to truly engage Rotary – to bring Rotary service and Rotary values into every day of your life –that is when you start to see the incredible impact you can have”. That is when we see that we really can change lives.

I have now just begun to make my visits to our clubs. I have been awed by the stories I’ve been told of projects and activities and funds raised to support club projects. These are stories of Rotarians living our theme. Be it ever so.

The Rotary Club of Lexington hosted the installation of District Governor (DG) Jack McAllister at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington on July 11, 2013. In attendance for the installation at Jack’s home club were Past District Governors (PDG) of RC Lexington Hunt Perkins, Bill Perrine, George Wilson, Tom Ashford and Robert Ryan and PDG John Adams and Christie of RC Somerset-Pulaski County. Participating in the installation were Immediate PDG Kathryn Hardman of RC London, accompanied by husband John Strojan, District Governor Elect John Salyers of RC Florence accompanied by his wife Connie and District Governor Nominee Cindy Legg of RC Paintsville. DG Jack was presented with the District Governor pin and the W.M. Albright District Governor’s briefcase by IPDG Kathryn Hardman who in turn received her Past District Governor pin. DGE John Salyers and DGN Cindy Legg each received the pin of their respective office.

In the inaugural meeting of the new Rotary year, the July 11 meeting of RC Lexington began with a Rotary Flag Ceremony at which the American flag followed by the State of Kentucky flag, the Rotary flag, the 2013-14 Rotary Theme banner Engage Rotary, Change Lives and the District 6740 banner were presented. The meeting continued with the installation of the officers and Board of RC Lexington. This was followed by the installation of the Officers and Board of the RC Lexington Endowment.

District Conference Awards - Club Builder and Peace Through Service Awards

District Rotarians enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by Chef Terry Crist and the fellowship of their colleagues during the Saturday night celebration banquet. The following awards were presented during the conference:

RC Lexington Rotary and Rotaract partner for Habitat for Humanity

The Yearlings organized a Rotary-Habitat Day with the Rotaract Club. They worked on homes for the Emmanuel Katchosa family and the Adolfo Garcia family. Everyone is invited to the Katchosa home dedication Dec. 19, 6:00pm at 224 Savoy Rd. DG Hardman visits RC Lexington

DG Kathryn Hardman addressed the Lexington club during her official visit on November 15 and congratulated them for their support of The David School, donations for the eradication of polio and winter coat project and discussed how these projects tie into the annual theme of "Peace Through Service." Kathryn was joined by DG Nominee John Salyers and DG Elect Jack McAllister.

RC Lexington Rotary Day at the Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League

The Rotary Club of Lexington had Rotary Day at the Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League, Saturday September 22. The Miracle League program in Lexington was made possible with the efforts of the Lexington Rotary Club, YMCA of Central KY and Toyota. The Miracle League is a baseball program for children 5-19 with any type of physical or mental disability. Many volunteers support the league providing, "buddies" for each child, umpires, coaches, announcers and food during the games. September 22, the Kentucky baseball team came out to help buddy with the players and Chick-fil-a provided lunch. "Everybody plays -everybody wins" is the motto of the league and that goes for all involved! The Lexington club is proud to have a long standing relationship and continues to support the league every fall and spring season.

RC Lexington hosts International Student picnic with UK - a tradition for over 20 years!

August 12 The Lexington Rotary club co-hosted with the University of Kentucky's Office of International Affairs a picnic for incoming international students to the university. Chairman Allen Grimes organized all the food, volunteers and door prizes. Door prizes were given to the student who had come the farthest, most recently arrived, etc....The picnic provides the students an opportunity to meet one another and for many it is the beginning of their American experience. Rotary has co-hosted this picnic for over 20 years.
