Rotary Youth Exchange

Outbound youth exchange participants recently attended a Rotary Youth Exchange orientation weekend at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. Training and team building exercises were conducted by the Rotarians involved in the Ohio Erie Youth Exchange program which includes 10 Rotary districts in the central/eastern US and southern Canada. Jack Lundy is the Chair of the Ohio-Erie Youth Exchange and the Youth Exchange Chair for the District and PDG Bill Perrine is the chair of the outgoing youth exchange students in the district. In addition to Jack and Bill, DG Jack McAllister participated in the orientation weekend and enjoyed getting to know the students. We wish outbound students Andrew Coburn (sponsored by the Georgetown Rotary club and going to France) and Sarah Webb (sponsored by the Versailles-Woodford County Rotary club and going to Austria) safe travels and a wonderful year as they begin this extraordinary experience.

RC Versailles Woodford County - A Night for a Better Tomorrow

Recently RC Versailles Woodford County hosted the inaugural event, A Night for a Better Tomorrow. The net proceeds have been donated to the Woodford County Backpack Project and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.  Sixty four people attended the event and, as you can see from the pictures, a wonderful time was had by all. Entertainment was provided by the Young at Hearts Band.

RC Versailles-Woodford County presents A Night for a Better Tomorrow on 2-16-2013

 

The Versailles - Woodford County Rotary Club announces that on February 16, 2013, a charity ball will be held at the prestigious Castle Post in Versailles, KY. The inaugural event, A Night for a Better Tomorrow, is being held in order to benefit two powerful causes which effect children both locally and globally: The Woodford County School Backpack Program and The Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Versailles - Woodford County Rotary Club Advisory Board has asked prospective attendees to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their spouses a few days late, by supporting these worthy causes.

 
Starting at 7:00 PM, the charity ball will feature a deluxe dinner, drink ticket and live entertainment by the Young at Heart Big Band, providing attendees with an ample opportunity to socialize, celebrate and enjoy the scenery. The cost of tickets is $200.00 per couple or $125.00 per individual.

“A Night for a Better Tomorrow is going to be big. We created this event with one purpose—and that is to help children who are in need,” remarked Ed Crowley, Versailles – Woodford County Rotary board member, and founder and CEO of Photizo Group. “Beyond being a great opportunity for a group of motivated, giving individuals to gather, this dinner will touch the lives of hundreds of children—and that is what matters here.”

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Woodford County Backpack Project and The Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The Woodford County Backpack Programis an initiative driven by the Woodford County Family Life Resource Center, which provides food for children whose nutritional needs are not being met at home. This program is designed for the children that qualify for the Woodford County school system’s free lunch program. These children are nourished by receiving breakfast and lunch at no charge. The Backpack Program ensures each child will have their own backpack to take home with food for the weekend to sustain them with a portion of their nutritional needs, until they return back to school the following Monday.

Polio is a crippling, fatal disease that remains without cure at this time. The disease can affect people at any age, but most commonly infects children under the age of five years old. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative aims to abolish this disease and has been a primary drive for the International Rotary Club’s charitable efforts.

Bringing another unique, charitable aspect to this event, The Young at Heart Big Band provides Central Kentucky children who could not usually afford them with musical instruments.

The devoted workforce of several churches in Woodford County work tirelessly each week to make sure that no child is disappointed on any Friday afternoon, by knowing that they will return home to limited or no provided meals. The “Spring Break Backpack Program” was undertaken by the Versailles-Woodford County Rotary Club when Linda Tilghman, Coordinator of the Family Resource Center, informed the club these children do not have food during the periods they are not in school, such as spring break. It has been the charge of Woodford County’s club to provide funding to the Backpack Program, particularly for this week of spring break, but to also have funds available for other times of need

RC Versailles-Woodford County hosted a successful Repair Affair!

The Versailles-Woodford County Rotary Club sponsored the Woodford County Repair Affair for the tenth year on September 9 – 10. It was a complete success! Woodford County had rain for 5 straight days prior to the event, but the clouds lifted and we had beautiful weather for both days. Over 275 volunteers were able to help 24 elderly or disabled low-income homeowners with repairs they could not do themselves. 

BEFORE

Some of the needs addressed this year included 2 roof replacements, 29 window replacements, bathroom floor replacements, utility meter pole replacement, gutter replacements, door replacements, wheel chair ramp installation, porch repairs and railing installation, dead bolt lock installations, install security bars on windows, yard work, washer / dryer relocation from basement to first floor, sump pump repairs, bathtub grab bar installations, window air conditioner replacement, numerous electrical and plumbing repairs, kitchen and bathroom cabinet repairs, drywall repairs, and lots of interior and exterior painting....All at NO COST to the homeowners! These repairs will have a major impact on our homeowners safety, security, accessibility, and overall quality of life. 

AFTER

The most rewarding part of the weekend was seeing the smiling faces of both volunteers and homeowners!

John's July Club Visits

In July District Governor John Adams visited RC Mt. Sterling, RC Nicholasville, RC Lexington Sunrise, RC Versailles-Woodford County, and RC Corbin. Many thanks to all the clubs for welcoming the DG and his family with such wonderful hospitality.

During the club visits we learned that RC Mt. Sterling is sponsoring an outbound youth exchange student, Morgan Danis, who will be living in Turkey during the upcoming academic year. The Mt. Sterling club is looking forward to its main fundraiser, Radio Days, in Spring, 2012.

RC Nicholasville reported on the $9000 in scholarship money it recently awarded to local youth. These scholarships are funded by the annual pancake breakfast held in February.

RC Lexington Sunrise recently celebrated local 5th graders at Arlington Elementary by hosting a graduation luncheon at which local news anchor Andrea Philpott shared words of wisdom with the students, who also received gifts from the club. Lexington Sunrise is looking forward to its Gospel concert featuring the Isaacs on November 11, 2011. In the mean time, its members will be hosting local youth during a fishing trip to the Salato Wildlife area in October.

RC Versailles-Woodford County will be sponsoring Repair Affair on September 9-10. The goal is to complete twenty-four projects during the event. Tan Keng Keng, Past President of RC Bugis Junction, Singapore, visited the club during a business trip to Versailles.

RC Corbin has begun preparations for its Empty Stocking event to be held in December. Other planned events include the London-Corbin International Dinner in February, a senior citizens dinner in November and a golf scramble in May. John had the privilege of inducting new member John Manon who was sponsored by Millie Burkhart.
