RC Pikeville Official District Governor Visit

The visit to RC Pikeville began the evening before the visit with the club on August 7 with dinner hosted by club President Gerrie Clark and David and followed by Rotarian Reed Potter’s guided tour of historic sites in Pikeville associated with the Hatfield-McCoy feud. RC Pikeville is a well known community presence through the many service projects it undertakes, several of them in support of other community charitable organizations and among them their International Dinner. At the club meeting President Gerrie announced their magnificent effort of providing over 1000 pairs of shoes for the Shoes for Orphan Souls project being undertaken in our district.

RC Maysville participates in the Shoes for Orphan Souls program

Rotary Effort to Benefit Orphans

The Maysville Rotary Club (#3775), along with Rotary Clubs across Kentucky are in a contest to see how many new shoes can be donated for the Shoes for Orphan Souls program. The district governor, Jack McAllister, for the 6740 Eastern Kentucky District has challenged Kentucky’s Western Districts in a friendly competition to see which district will collect the most shoes, which will be donated to the Buckner International, a global Christian ministry. Buckner provides an array of services to meet the needs of children and families, including humanitarian aid support, volunteer mission opportunities, foster care and adoption services.

Maysville Rotary Club President Michael Parker said the program is another project Rotary is contributing to. “We just want to bring our fair share to help out,” Parker said.

Shoes for Orphan Souls is Buckner’s largest humanitarian aid project. Each Rotary member has been asked to donate one new pair of sneakers or athletic shoes, plus a new pair of socks. To help as many children as possible, Rotary members are asking help from the community and other civic organizations to meet the district governor’s challenge. Arrangements have been made with the Maysville-Mason County Chamber of Commerce to serve as a donation drop-off location, Parker said. Shoe sizes needed are from a youth size one to adult size 9. Donations can also be dropped off with any Rotary member, or on Tuesdays when the Maysville chapter holds its weekly meeting from 11:30 to 1 p.m., at the Rotary clubhouse on Bridge Street. Parker said shoes will be collected until November, at which time the shoes will be shipped to Buckner International. The shoes are distributed to children in the United States and 73 other countries. Since 1999, more than 2.5 million pairs of new shoes have been distributed.

Message from Rotarian Bruce Begley regarding the Shoe Project

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

I have been asked by our District Governor for 2013-14, Jack McAllister, to serve as his aide. During his term in office, I will be visiting many clubs and am looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible.

But first, let me get right to the point. I have been given the opportunity to serve as coordinator and "cheerleader” for The Buckner Shoe Project. This is the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International providing new shoes and socks to orphans in the United States and throughout the world. Rotary clubs in our district and District 6710, our sister Rotary district in Kentucky, will be assisting in this important effort by collecting athletic shoes sizes youth 1 – Adult 9.

Why are new shoes so important?

New shoes provide health.
In many developing countries we serve, children are forced to walk barefoot for miles to gather clean water, to visit a doctor or to go to school. Diseases like hookworm, jiggers, tetanus and other parasites enter the body through the feet. These diseases can stunt a child's growth and development, as well as cause life-long cognitive impairment. Walking barefoot in rocky or muddy terrain can also cause injury to a child's feet, further opening the possibility for infection or disease.
New shoes provide education.
Many schools around the world require children to wear shoes to attend, but for many poverty-stricken families, shoes are a luxury they cannot afford.
New shoes provide hope.
For many of the children we serve in orphanages around the world, new shoes are a constant and urgent need. They do not own a single possession to their name. New shoes provide hope for these children that someone out there cares about them and loves them unconditionally.
Why new shoes? They communicate volumes about what someone is worth. Simply put, we think the children we serve are worth it.

There is nothing like a good competition to add excitement and motivation. In this spirit, District 6710 has challenged District 6740 claiming they will collect more shoes per Rotarian than we will for the Buckner Shoe Project. The collection process will continue until the November Joint District Conference in Louisville where the participating Rotary Clubs will receive recognition for their efforts. The President Elect in your club has all the information needed to begin. As important as this contest is, let us not lose sight of this important cause. New shoes help keep children healthy and safe. Without the gift of new shoes, children might never reach their full potential. Rotary Shoe Project - Collecting Shoes for the Buckner Shoe Project

District Governor Jack McAllister has asked me to be his aid and the cheerleader for the Buckner Shoe Project. I have created a plan to encourage support that includes the You Tube video below among other short videos. We have asked that each club keep track of the number of shoes they are gathering and provide that information to the Assistant Governor for your club. This person will then pass the information to me, and I will send an updated exciting video to all District members.

We look forward to your communication and appreciate your participation.

Here is the video. Please, feel free to watch and share at your club meetings.
