News from the Rotary Club of Cynthiana:

Youth Exchange/Interact – On August 6, 7 and 8th we were able to set up a table during the Harrison County High School student registration week. On these days we were ready to talk to incoming freshman thru junior students about the various Rotary Youth Exchange programs. Plus we gave out information about the possibility of establishing an Interact club either at the High School or as a club separate from the High School.

Volunteerism Fair

The Club held the above event on October 18, 2012.  The VF provides an opportunity for all Harrison County High School students to learn about opportunities for volunteering with over 20 local organizations.  The organizations set up in the high school gym and get to talk with students about the Mission of the organizations.  Students can volunteer on the spot and find out more info about volunteer opportunities.

During the event the Club announced that it would award the Club’s Harrison County High School (HCHS) Student Volunteer of the Year during the May 2013 High School Awards ceremony.

Three (3) judges selected HCHS Freshman Jared Thomas who was nominated by The Salvation Army.  Jared received a plaque noting the honor and The Salvation Army received a $100 donation from the Club.

 This event was posted on the RI website in the Rotary Showcase.  Recently Dale Diffendal, A Rotarian from Cleveland contacted Doug Price about featuring this event on a radio program he does for Cleveland’s AM 1330 WELW!  Dave has a program on the station called rotaryradiointernational.  The program will air In August.

RC Cynthiana hosts Recognition Day and Officer Installation



Cynthiana Rotary installs news officers for 2013-2014

Cynthiana Rotary installed new officers while outgoing officers were recognized for their hard work and commitment at the June 27^th installation lunch. Past President, Mike Babb who was also inducted as the Assistant Governor for District 6740- Area 4 presented awards and honors to members who have given service and time above and beyond the call of duty. Presidential citations were awarded to: Dr. George Tanner; Ralph Deitemeyer; John Hodge; Amanda Morris; and Dinesh Mistry. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Earl McNabb. Paul Harris Fellowships were presented to Judge David Melcher and Thomas Bowland. Each award was met with a round of applause by fellow Rotarians and family members who were invited to attend the luncheon.

Cynthiana Rotary new Officers and Directors installations are: Doug Price, President; Diana Gordon, President Elect; Mike Babb, Past President; Ralph Deitemeyer, Vice President; Darwin Root, Executive Secretary; Jim Ingram, Treasurer; Karen Bear, Director; James Custard, Director; Mark Trachsel, Director; and Cindy War, Director.

Rotary is comprised of citizens from various backgrounds and disciplines who volunteer their time to make positive differences locally in Cynthiana and internationally. Rotarians strive to make the world a better place while placing “Service Above Self”. There are more than 34,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide with a membership of over 1.2 million. Cynthiana Rotary has had a charter since 1923 and is preparing for their 90 year celebration.

The Rotary club meets every Thursday at noon at Biancke’s Restaurant.

RC Cynthiana to hold informational meeting on their Haiti project

We plan to have a informational meeting on October 25, 2012 at 1:30 pm and it is expected the meeting will last a couple of hours. The meeting will probably be held in Cynthiana but the exact location has not been set.

Please rsvp attendance via return email to me – please respond with a yes or no so we can better plan the meeting.

Our club hopes to take the project to the next level and actively solicits your help and support toward this goal. Discussion items will include: on the ground report from Avi (visiting Haiti early October), formation of an OTA committee, discuss RI presentation, possibility of RI grants or other sources of funding.

RC Cynthiana partners with Lions Club for upcoming Taste of Harrison County

The Cynthiana Rotary club will participate in the upcoming Cynthiana Lions club event called the Taste of Harrison County.  Below is information circulated by the Public Relations committee of the Cynthiana Rotary club.  This information is sent to the Chamber, the local newspaper, a couple of our major industries, the City and County officials, Lexington TV stations via Facebook, and the high school.  You will note that the wording highlights an event being sponsored by another organization.  During our recently completed Visioning process we expressed a desire to work more closely with other community organizations within our community.  This is one way to support them while also doing work for our Club. 

The annual Taste of Harrison County (sponsored by the Cynthiana Lions club) will be held on September 8, 2012.  The event has been sponsored by the Cynthiana Lions club for approximately 10 years.  

The Cynthiana Rotary club (1 of 9 food booths) will be selling hamburgers/cheeseburgers and soft drinks.

The Taste of Harrison County will have over 60 craft booths, train rides, a baked goods sale/auction, musical performances, a martial arts demonstration, Jazzercise, a hard hat painting contest (hard hats donated by Bullard) and door prizes will be offered.

Plus the Chamber will have the 15^th Annual Born To Run 5K Run/Walk; the Community Health Partnership Wellness/HMH will have the Little Feet, Big Feet 1 mile Family Fun Walk; and Journey Medical Mission has an open house from 9 am – 12 noon!  Lots going on in our hometown.

Visit the Rotary booth and the numerous others craft/food booths and support your hometown!

RC Cynthiana to host Volunteerism Fair

The Cynthiana Rotary club in conjunction with the Harrison County School Board and the Harrison County High School (HCHS) will sponsor a Volunteerism Fair at the HCHS on October 18, 2012.  During the Fair approximately 1,000 high school students will have an opportunity to visit with over 20 local organization/agencies that may need student volunteers.  The goal is to help with volunteer awareness, allow students to connect with local agencies and to create a volunteer mindset early on which may follow students throughout their lives.

RC Cynthiana Runs PSAs re: Polio Eradication

One of our Cynthiana Rotarians had a great idea about obtaining PSAs about RI and the eradication of polio.  Easy enough to do – just go to the RI website and download 30 second PSAs.  Well, after checking the RI website – maybe not so easy!  Three (3) separate PSAs (see below) were developed and these are now running on our local radio station (WCYN 1400 AM).  In a month or so we may change the PSAs if there are any substantial updates.  Several of our Rotarians volunteered to record the PSAs.

WCYN will be happy to record and play 30 second PSAs.   Take this form to them any day (M-F) after 9:15 am (or after Rotary meeting) and record 1 or more of the below messages.

1) Hi this is __________________from the Cynthiana Rotary club.  For many years Rotary International has waged the battle against polio. Polio cases have declined rapidly since 1985, but the fight isn't over. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease but we can immunize every child for approximately $.66 each.  Find out how you can help finish the job.   Go to www.endpolio.org for information.

 

2) From 360,000 cases worldwide in 1988 to under 1,400 cases in 2010. RC Cynthiana - Orange Tree Atelye initiative - Service Project Opportunity

The Cynthiana Rotary club has been working on a special project for the last 2 + years. The project is named the Orange Tree Atelye initiative and our goal is to provide economical, disaster resistant housing in developing countries such as Haiti. The project was born out of the desire to help Haiti after the devastating earthquake of January 2010.

Working with a multi disciplinary team from the University of Cincinnati a prototype structure was designed and built at the Flat Run Veterans Park in Cynthiana. 

At this time we have developed three (3) distinct goals:

1) Establish a Steering Committee. This committee would be made up of individuals from each of the District 6740 Rotary clubs within our area plus representatives from other Rotary clubs who choose to participate.
2) Involvement of Rotary International. Essentially we hope to have RI take over the project and administer this project worldwide.
3) Build A Kit Project. Imagine the Shelter Box program - we would package/sell a kit to build a house. Individual Rotary Clubs could purchase the kit and build in the country of their choice.

During the next six (6) months we would like to visit with your Club and provide the program to make a presentation about our project. After the meeting we would like to know of your interest in this project. Each participating Club will need to designate at least one (1) individual to serve on the Committee. The Steering Committee would meet in January 2013 to discuss where we go from here and set additional goals, timelines, etc. We believe the Steering Committee would need to meet once a month and feel there would be at least a 2 year commitment.

International projects are an important part of being a member of Rotary International. Some clubs are already involved in their own international projects and others do not place much emphasis on the international aspect of Rotary. Participation in this important project allows your Club to join a group of Rotary clubs in making a difference with this international program.

Cynthiana Rotary Club

Volunteerism Fair

Held April 19, 2012

In January 2012 a proposal to hold a Volunteerism Fair (VF) was made to our Club Board.  The Board gave approval for the effort.  The Event Purpose was to instill a volunteer mindset for our young people that will follow them for the rest of their lives.  During the Fair Harrison County High School students would visit the booths and be given the opportunity to learn more about volunteering for local organizations.

Over the next couple of months our VF Committee met to work out the details:  contacting organizations to determine interest, talking with school officials, etc. We identified 50+ organizations and individually contacted each to determine their interest in participating.  After determining that we would have at least 20 to attend we sent a formal invitation to be a part of the effort. The reasons organizations did not participate included:  we don’t use student volunteers (safety issues or hasn’t worked out before) and too busy with other projects.

The event was held on April 19, 2012.  During the day approximately 1,000 Harrison County High School students visited the booths set up by 22 organizations (we had 1 no show).  There were over 70 people with the organizations and this total includes 13 Rotarians who helped during the event.  Several organizations had people working in shifts.

The verbal feedback from the students, teachers, and organization participants was very positive.  At least 2 organizations had over 150 students to sign up!  Each person was asked to fill out a Feedback Form (copy attached).  By the end of the day we had 36 forms submitted and the rating of the effort on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest) was a solid 9.00.

The Cynthiana Rotary Club had a booth and we had 55 students to sign up to volunteer to help us with our Fab 4^th project.  We will contact these students later to verify their availability and also we will consider the possibility of utilizing this list to start an Interact Program at the School.

Prior to the event we sent out a Press Release to our local newspaper and Lexington TV stations.  While this did not generate TV coverage we will have pictures and a story in the Cynthiana Democrat.
