News from RC Campbell County

Campbell County Rotary took part in the Lodge 10 FOP 5C Run/Walk on Aug. 17 at A. J. Jolly Park.  This is a 3.2 mile marathon to benefit the police with their kids' Christmas present program.  Members of the Rotary handed out water at the half way turn. 

The club's next activity is planned for Aug. 31 when it will set up a booth at the Dunk The Educator fund raiser to benefit Special Olympics of Northern Ky.  Rotarians will be selling split the pot chances. 

Campbell County Rotarians also took part in the NKU Volunteerism Fair on Aug. 21. 

Programs have been outstanding.  Recent speakers have been County Commissioner Brian Painter; CEO of Southbank, Jack Moreland; and Asst. Dir. for North Key, Sandra George.

A great turnout of guests attended the Rotary International Dinner hosted by RCs Corbin and London on February 16^th. Approximately 20 countries were represented and about 400 people attended the dinner. Proceeds from the Dinner will be sent to Polio Plus campaign on behalf of the London and Corbin Rotary Clubs.

 

Garry Conley (former Club President), wife Amy and their granddaughter were proud to say “We are this close…” to eradicating Polio!

 

We had GREAT representation from the Philippines.

RC Versailles Woodford County - A Night for a Better Tomorrow

Recently RC Versailles Woodford County hosted the inaugural event, A Night for a Better Tomorrow. The net proceeds have been donated to the Woodford County Backpack Project and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.  Sixty four people attended the event and, as you can see from the pictures, a wonderful time was had by all. Entertainment was provided by the Young at Hearts Band.

RC Versailles-Woodford County presents A Night for a Better Tomorrow on 2-16-2013

 

The Versailles - Woodford County Rotary Club announces that on February 16, 2013, a charity ball will be held at the prestigious Castle Post in Versailles, KY. The inaugural event, A Night for a Better Tomorrow, is being held in order to benefit two powerful causes which effect children both locally and globally: The Woodford County School Backpack Program and The Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Versailles - Woodford County Rotary Club Advisory Board has asked prospective attendees to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their spouses a few days late, by supporting these worthy causes.

 
Starting at 7:00 PM, the charity ball will feature a deluxe dinner, drink ticket and live entertainment by the Young at Heart Big Band, providing attendees with an ample opportunity to socialize, celebrate and enjoy the scenery. The cost of tickets is $200.00 per couple or $125.00 per individual.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Woodford County Backpack Project and The Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The Woodford County Backpack Programis an initiative driven by the Woodford County Family Life Resource Center, which provides food for children whose nutritional needs are not being met at home. This program is designed for the children that qualify for the Woodford County school system’s free lunch program. These children are nourished by receiving breakfast and lunch at no charge. The Backpack Program ensures each child will have their own backpack to take home with food for the weekend to sustain them with a portion of their nutritional needs, until they return back to school the following Monday.

Polio is a crippling, fatal disease that remains without cure at this time. The disease can affect people at any age, but most commonly infects children under the age of five years old. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative aims to abolish this disease and has been a primary drive for the International Rotary Club’s charitable efforts.

Bringing another unique, charitable aspect to this event, The Young at Heart Big Band provides Central Kentucky children who could not usually afford them with musical instruments.

The devoted workforce of several churches in Woodford County work tirelessly each week to make sure that no child is disappointed on any Friday afternoon, by knowing that they will return home to limited or no provided meals. The “Spring Break Backpack Program” was undertaken by the Versailles-Woodford County Rotary Club when Linda Tilghman, Coordinator of the Family Resource Center, informed the club these children do not have food during the periods they are not in school, such as spring break. It has been the charge of Woodford County’s club to provide funding to the Backpack Program, particularly for this week of spring break, but to also have funds available for other times of need

RC Campbell County stays busy!

On Nov. 24 Campbell Co. Rotary assisted FOP Lodge 10 with their 5 C Run/Walk by handing out water at the turn. Profits from this are used by the police for their Kids 'n Christmas project to buy presents.

 Dec. 9 CC held a dog contest in conjunction with Christmas in Alexandria, a month long community activity involving concerts, craft sales, children's tea, etc. Alexandria Mayor, the Alexandria Police Chief and a fireman from the Alexandria Fire Dept. judged dogs in 3 categories: Best Costume, Best Tricks, and Best Couple. In the kick off parade CC Rotary President, Arnd, walked his puppy to attract attendtion to the contest. Winston really strutted his stuff. Rotary then hosted a dinner/concert on Dec. 16. Profits from this were donated to the CARE Mission in Alexandria. Thanks to Gary Stewart, a member of the Florence Rotary, and talent he brought the concert was fantastic and enjoyed by all.

The CC Rotary was happy to induct Becky Timberlake into membership. Becky is a Development Specialist with Brighton Center, a community support organization.

RC Paris and RC West Liberty barbeque and auction

The Rotary Clubs of Paris and West Liberty hosted a barbeque and auction to benefit West Liberty and help with projects needed in the West Liberty community following last spring's devastating tornados. Cheryl McGraw of the West Liberty club and Auctioneer and Rotarian Bill T. McConnell of the Paris club were assisted by the local Interact Club in conducting the auction. Paris and West Liberty Rotarians along with DG Kathryn Hardman and AG Lori Acton gathered following the successful auction that raised about $2,000.

RC Paris hosted several holiday programs

The Paris Rotary Club had several programs to foster Christmas spirit during the holiday season. On December 3rd the Rotary Club sponsored a community Christmas concert which featured local singers/choirs performing Christmas carols. At our regular meeting on December 5, Paris High School students treated us to a selection of Christmas music including a modified version of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" to showcase daily events in the life of a high school student. At the December 12th meeting, the Bourbon County High School choir sang a medley of songs that certainly put the spirit of Christmas in each Rotarian present. Of course, the Rotarians could not pass up the opportunity to sing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" to the students. With all the wonderful music presented by and to the Paris Rotary Club, Paris was ready for the Christmas season.

RC Florence Christmas Concert

The concert was held Dec. 3, 2012 at Lakeside Christian Church. Approximately 700 were in attendance. This was our 44th concert since 1991 of which the Florence Rotary Club joined with us Christmas 2006. We average two concerts per year.

This Christmas concert gave all proceeds to The American Cancer Society and the offering total $6,543.00 plus $200 which came in after the concert and the total became $6,743.00.

Our next concert will be held at the Florence Baptist Church in Florence, KY on May 13th, 2013. All proceeds from this future concert will go to the Rotary Club and at this time all or most will be sent to Polio Plus.

 

We were very happy to see our District Governor Kathryn Hardman attend and speak at the concert.

 

RC Paris hosts Pie and Cake Auction

Paris Rotary Club’s Annual Pie and Cake Auction

Paris Rotary Club’s annual pie and cake auction was held Thursday evening November 1st as a fun way to raise money for the scholarship program.  The evening’s event was well attended with approximately seventy-five Rotarians and their guests in attendance.  Not only did the attendees bring their appetites, (dining on delicious crab legs, fresh shrimp, and oysters), they brought their checkbooks as well.  Close to $5900 was raised as the bidding for the cakes and pies became spirited with the highest auctioned cake bringing over $600.  The event netted out over $2900 for the scholarship program which is an increase of almost a $1000 from the same event last year.  Special guests included District Governor Kathyrn Hardman, and Past District Governor  John Adams, Christie, and of course Charlie.  A special thanks to Rotarians Tom Brannock and Bill T. McConnell for coordinating and conducting this special event.

As a way to continue to serve others, the Paris Rotary Club held a joint meeting with the West Liberty Rotary Club on Saturday, November 10.  The Paris Club brought items collected from members to be auctioned to benefit the Morgan Central Elementary School in West Liberty.

RC Paintsville and Kiwanis team up to host race

RC Pikeville hosts International Dinner

The Pikeville Rotary Club held their annual International Dinner on Friday evening June 1, 2012 at the East Kentucky Exposition Center in conjunction with the Pikeville Main Street Program.  Entertainment was provided by the local band “Big Iron” featuring a variety of music.  Sandy Johnson was the event chairperson for the 2012 event.  This was the 7^th year for the event.  The first year 4 countries were represented; this year food from several countries was available to include:  Syria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, India, Japan, China, Mexico, and the United States.  The most talked about food of the evening was the “Hillbilly” cuisine; which included soup beans, corn bread and all the fixins’.  The dinner had over 300 attendees and raised approximately $8,000 for various club projects. 

RC Paris hosts concert fundraiser

The Paris Rotary Club held their 3rd Annual Christmas Concert to benefit Rotary International and PolioPlus. Over 230 people enjoyed a wide variety of Christmas music. A love offering was taken and the club raised over $1,300. Paris Rotarians are very proud to have a new tradition to bring the community together. The talent included Veaches Chapel Gospel Choir, pianist Owen Sammons, pianist & vocalist Debra Garr, Old Cane Springs bluegrass band, First Baptist Church bell choir, and many other talented individuals. The 4th Annual Paris Rotary Christmas Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, December 4th, 2012 at 7:00 pm and all are welcome.

RC Maysville hosts Horse Show then hosts Hillbilly Horseshoes!

 The Maysville Rotary Club had a very busy September!  On September 10^th, we held our Annual Rotary Horse Show. This is always successful. Even though we had a light rain for a few minutes, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the participants and the Rotarians. We were excited to have DG John Adams, Christie, and little Charlie in attendance. Proceeds from the horse show help provide scholarships to 2 Mason County students who attend Maysville Community & Technical College.

On September 20^th, we had as our guest speaker, D G John Adams. He brought us up-to-date on the changes in RI and reminded us of the great work Rotary International does worldwide. After the meeting, John was asked to toss out the first Hillbilly Horse Shoe, actually a toilet seat. John and DG Assistant Jackie Hopkins both took the challenge. 

September 23-24, Maysville Rotary sponsored an activity in Maysville’s Annual "Pig Out in Maysville". This event is a fundraiser for our local Shriner’s Transportation Fund.  We chose to have Hillbilly Horse Shoes. This consists of plungers as stakes, and toilet seats for the horse shoes. This brought quite a lot of comments and participation. All of the proceeds from our activity will be donated to the local Oleika Shriner’s Club. The highlight of this came late in the evening on Saturday. Stober Drives participated in what they termed “World Championship Hillbilly Horseshoes”. They had employees from 10 countries involved in this playoff. The countries in attendance were: Switzerland, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore, England, China, Australia, and the US. No one actually knows who won but the Italians were claiming the title. Mr. Brend Stober, from Germany & president of Stober Drives even tossed the horse shoes. Can you imagine the tales they will have when they return home?

We also have inducted 3 new members: Gerry Schumacher, First State Bank of Ohio, Dawn Browning, director of KY Gateway Museum, and Whitney Evans, owner of Whitney’s Fine Jewelry.

Whew, what a busy month!!!!

Next will be our 3^rd annual “Purses for a Purpose” purse sale. New or gently-used purses are donated by Rotarians and their friends for this sale. Last year, we had around 500 purses and made over $3200. We’re hoping for a bigger sale this year.
