Pikeville Rotary Installs Officers

On Tuesday, June 28, members of the Pikeville Rotary Club gathered at the EXPO Center for their annual Awards Banquet and Installation Ceremony.  Outgoing President James Sullivan presided over the event at which close to 100 Rotarians, their friends and guests enjoyed an evening of fellowship and honors.

Sullivan spoke with pride about his term as president of the club, citing a list of local charities which benefitted from the generosity of Rotary.  During Sullivan’s presidency, the Pikeville Rotary supported the efforts of organizations like the Boy Scouts, Coats for Kids, Jenny Wiley Theater, the Mountain Mission School, Relay for Life, WestCare and the YMCA to name a few.  The total amount donated locally exceeded $12,000.
On the international front, the club donated to Heifer International, sponsored two Shelter Boxes (huge plastic tubs which contain a tent and supplies to support a family in a disaster area) and raised money to apply for a Rotary Foundation matching grant to provide an irrigation pump for a cooperative farm in northern India (the Lemongrass Project) .
Dinner was followed by the bestowing of awards.  Club Secretary Karen Roberts Prater recognized those Rotarians with perfect attendance – Jack Burchett, Mayo Clark III, Betty Francisco, J.B. Gilliam, Eva Hinkle, Pam Howard, Roger Martin, Bill Maynard, Karen Prater, Howard Roberts, James Sullivan, Robert Williams, Mary Wiss, John “Yogi”Yagodich.
Past District Governor Carrie Cinnamond Rose spoke of the criteria for receiving one of the highest honors in Rotary, being named a Paul Harris Fellow.  Recipients of this distinction included Rotarians J.B. Gilliam, Paul Blackburn, David Lester, Jeff Hatfield, Karen Prater, Cindy Johnson, Stephanie Richards, Misty Daniels and Kay Hammond.  Also honored as Fellows were Jean F. Williamson, R. Michael Pack, Dr. Cade Coleman Cinnamond, Cara Cinnamond, Vicki Charles and Irene Birchfield.
President Sullivan continued the awards ceremony by naming Betty Francisco and Eva Hinkle to receive the Club Service Award, Regina Compton and Sandy Johnson the Community Service Award, and Melanie Horton and Charlie Pinson the Vocational Service Award.  Sullivan noted the exceptional work of Karen Prater as club secretary and Marcheta Blackburn as club treasurer.
The final and most prestigious club award, Rotarian of the Year, was given to Gerrie Clark for her dedication and service on behalf of the Pikeville Rotary.
The evening continued as Judge Eddy Coleman installed the 2011-12 officers and board members.  Those included President Jeanne W. Clark, President Elect Howard Roberts, President Nominee Gerrie Clark, Secretary Karen Prater, Treasurer Marcheta Blackburn, Sergeant at Arms Heath Wiley, and board members Eva Hinkle, Melanie Horton, Julie Clark, and Darrell Maynard (to be sworn later were A.O. Onkst and Brad Hall).
Past President James Glass presented Sullivan with the traditional Plaque of Past Presidents which Sullivan will hold until a new president takes over in 2012-13.  Incoming president Jeanne Clark made a few personal remarks praising Sullivan for his service this year and presenting him with a diamond Past President’s pin.  Clark also noted her passion for Rotary and her hopes and expectations for a positive and rewarding new year.
Misty Daniels concluded the evening by singing the uplifting “Light Your World” charging Rotarians to
Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle,
and go light your world”
