Message from the Governor

Every year Rotary renews itself in July. We celebrate the officers who lead us the year before and install new ones. We observe our accomplishments of the last Rotary year and make new goals for the new Rotary Year. We are granted a new theme to ponder from the incoming Rotary International President. To these ends, I congratulate now PDG Robert Ryan for a wonderful 2010-11. His (and Dean Hammond’s) leadership in the World Equestrian Games fundraising project was less about raising a huge sum of needed money for polio eradication (worthy in itself), but more about what we can do if we come together and think big. Past President Ray Klinginsmith’s 2010-11 call of “Building Communities and Bridging Continents” was certainly answered in 6740.

This year, RI President Kalyan Banerjee has given us the charge to “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.” The call is to look in our hearts to find the resolve to serve humanity. In addition to the theme, Banerjee has three emphases: 1) Family, 2) Continuity, and 3) Change.

I will explain how Continuity and Change are not mutually exclusive in a successive message, but at this writing I would like to discuss Family. As many of you know I share the privilege of being a Rotary Governor with my wife Christie and, more recently, Charlie our 16 month old son. Rotary has become a family project in the Adams household. We have had great support from everyone and it has empowered Christie and me. I hope we are an example that Rotary is not merely an activity for one individual of a household, but it can be and must be shared in the household.

In late June we attended the installation ceremony of Governor Jeanne Quave of RC Panama City Beach, District 6940 (Northwest Florida) while on vacation. A single mother, Gov. Jeanne, has shared her Rotary experience with her daughters, Olivia (14) and Molly (13). The positive effect of the Rotary experience on Jeanne’s young daughters was apparent at the installation. Both girls spoke at the installation with great confidence and poise. Both Olivia and Molly have a remarkable sense of the satisfaction of serving for their age. Though I know he will not remember the experience, I know this Rotary experience of travelling around the District will have a similarly positive effect on Charlie even at his age. Thank you for letting us share Rotary with Charlie as we visit the District!

In Rotary, “family” has a larger definition than those in a  household. As Rotarians we are blessed by having a larger family that includes our fellow club members and those we meet in service from other Rotary Clubs. That has become  even more apparent in my own Rotary Club as we recently lost a member of our family with the sudden and tragic passing of Jack Ford. Though losing Jack is very painful right now, I celebrate his service to others and value the privilege of having had him as part of my Rotary Family. Therefore, I ask each Rotarian to “reach within” their clubs, and “embrace” their fellow club members by taking value of their fellow club members.

Installation

On Thursday, July 7, John Adams was installed as the new Governor for Rotary District 6740. The installation ceremony was held at the home of John and Debby Patton in Somerset. Rotarians from all over District 6740 came together for an evening of fellowship and fun. The efforts of PDG Robert Ryan and his wife, Patty, were celebrated. In addition, RC Somerset-Pulaski County inducted two members, recognized its Past President, Pamela Jensen-Stanley and installed President Lisa Mullins. RC Somerset recognized its Past President, Elaine Wilson and installed President Wendell Lyon. Thank you our wonderful hosts, the Pattons, the Daltons and the Wilfords, and to all the Rotarians who traveled to attend such a special evening!

PDG Robert Ryan presented the PHF to Cathy.

Rotary Leadership Institute

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses offered to refine a Rotarian's leadership skills and increase their base of knowledge in Rotary.

Courses are fun, topical, interactive and geared toward busy business and professional Rotarians who want to be more effective leaders in their vocations and their clubs.  It is recommended that clubs nominate 2 Rotarians each year to begin RLI and support prior attendees’ continuation of the Parts II and III.

John's July Club Visits

In July District Governor John Adams visited RC Mt. Sterling, RC Nicholasville, RC Lexington Sunrise, RC Versailles-Woodford County, and RC Corbin. Many thanks to all the clubs for welcoming the DG and his family with such wonderful hospitality.

During the club visits we learned that RC Mt. Sterling is sponsoring an outbound youth exchange student, Morgan Danis, who will be living in Turkey during the upcoming academic year. The Mt. Sterling club is looking forward to its main fundraiser, Radio Days, in Spring, 2012.

RC Nicholasville reported on the $9000 in scholarship money it recently awarded to local youth. These scholarships are funded by the annual pancake breakfast held in February.

RC Lexington Sunrise recently celebrated local 5th graders at Arlington Elementary by hosting a graduation luncheon at which local news anchor Andrea Philpott shared words of wisdom with the students, who also received gifts from the club. Lexington Sunrise is looking forward to its Gospel concert featuring the Isaacs on November 11, 2011. In the mean time, its members will be hosting local youth during a fishing trip to the Salato Wildlife area in October.

RC Versailles-Woodford County will be sponsoring Repair Affair on September 9-10. The goal is to complete twenty-four projects during the event. Tan Keng Keng, Past President of RC Bugis Junction, Singapore, visited the club during a business trip to Versailles.

RC Corbin has begun preparations for its Empty Stocking event to be held in December. Other planned events include the London-Corbin International Dinner in February, a senior citizens dinner in November and a golf scramble in May. John had the privilege of inducting new member John Manon who was sponsored by Millie Burkhart.

RC Ashland's Repair Affair

On a hot summer day in June, several Ashland Rotarians could be found painting, mowing, pressure-washing and weed-eating. Ordinarily, that’s not a big deal, since most of us spend our weekends doing these chores. However, these people were volunteering their time to do these chores for others who cannot. This is the kind of thing that epitomizes the Rotary philosophy; Service Above Self.

For the past several years Ashland Rotarians have participated in Repair Affair, a program that helps local home owners make repairs and improvements to their home at no cost to them. The home owners are selected based on need.  Rotarians bring their own tools, lawn mowers and pressure washers and the club pays for any paint that is required.

RC Kenton County Awards Scholarships

The Kenton County Rotary Club awarded $4,500 in scholarships to three seniors in the Kenton County area. Lauren Elizabeth Schultz graduate of Dixie Heights High School received the $2,500 scholarship from the club. Lauren plans to attend Hannover College where she will major in International Studies while obtaining a minor in Spanish and Art History.  Harold Lee Thomlinson, graduate of Beechwood High School received a $1,000 scholarship from the club. Harold plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University where he will major in fire protection administration.  Kelly Maria Kleier graduate of Notre Dame Academy received a $1,000 scholarship from the club. She plans to attend Xavier University where she will major in Biology.

Maysville Rotary Club Makes History!

Maysville Rotary Club recently made history.  For the first time in the history of Maysville Rotary (est. 1923), a female, Barb Campbell, was elected President.  Barb is a very energetic member and will continue in the great work of our Past President, Xandy Stewart.  While Xandy was president, our club grew from 42 members to 54 members.  This was not an easy task but one of which Maysville Rotary is very proud.  President Barb is affiliated with Maysville Community and Technical College and is known for her organizational skills, enthusiasm, and leadership.
Our club sponsored a STEP (Short Term Exchange Program) student this year and that is another first for Maysville.  Whitney Allen, a graduate from Mason County 2011, was accepted and is spending 3 weeks in Ecuador.  When she returns, she will be bringing her Ecuador STEP friend to Maysville for a 3week visit.  The two will be speaking at our meeting on August 9th. Whitney will be entering Western KY University this fall, majoring in photo journalism.  She is the daughter of Dr. Peter & Katherine Egan.
Maysville Rotary is now in the midst of planning our Annual Rotary Horse Show to be held on Sept. 10 at the Germantown Fairgrounds.  This has been one of our annual fundraisers for over 40 years.  For more information about this show, call Doug Hendrickson at 606-564-6846 or Xandy Stewart at 606-407-4005.

Bon Voyage to Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound Students!

Outbound youth exchange participants recently attended a Rotary Youth Exchange orientation weekend at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. Pictured from left: Morgan Danis, Montgomery County High in Mt. Sterling, going to Turkey; Adrienne Lowry, Henry Clay High in Lexington, going to France; Christopher Fuchs, Scott County High in Georgetown, going to Japan; District Governor John Adams; Callie Mobley, Scott County High, going to Czech Republic; and Caroline Schlansky, Bryan Station High in Lexington, going to Spain. We wish all of the outbound students safe travels and a wonderful year as they begin this extraordinary experience!

RC Whitesburg Has a Successful Fundraiser!

The Rotary Club of Whitesburg just completed a summer fundraising—selling RADA cutlery.  We set our sales goal at $1200 (24 members @ $50 per member). We ended up with total sales of $2,850, plus received donations of $100.  Our net profit was $1250. As an incentive to get members to participate in this fundraiser, we gave $50 in free RADA Cutlery to the member who sold the most.  The winner was Treasurer Barbara Ison who sold $560.  The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to purchase dictionaries for every 3rd grader in the two school systems in Letcher County in the fall.   The club will distribute 295 dictionaries to students and provide reference books for each 3rd grade classroom for a cost of $500.  We exceeded our sales goal and will use the additional funds to support another service project planned for the Rotary year.

In addition to promoting the project within the club, we did direct selling from the catalogs, placed public service announcements on both local radio stations, placed an ad in the two local newspapers, and listed it on our new website, (www.clubrunner.ca/whitesburg-ky). We set up an internet account with RADA (an option offered by RADA) — so friends and relatives who lived out of town or out of state could purchase items. We provided instructions in our advertisements and on the website on how to place on-line orders so that our Club would get credit for the sale.  We had orders placed as far away as Kansas.

As Kalyan Bannerjee says, "we will need to think in new and different ways, explore new ways of seeing.  If we do what we have always done, we will get what we have always gotten—nothing better, nothing more.”

We tried a new approach for our fundraising and it paid off.  Our RADA on-line account will be active for one year so anyone who would like to support the Club can do so by ordering RADA products any time during the year.

In 13 May 1958, the Internal Revenue Service declared that Rotary International (RI) and its clubs and districts are entitled to exemption from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code.  While Rotary districts and clubs are exempt from paying federal income tax, the law does require Rotary clubs and districts to file an annual information return on IRS Form 990, on or before the 15th day of the 5th month following the close of the annual accounting period (15 November). Certain organizations, other than private foundations, that do not normally receive more than $25,000 in gross receipts in each taxable year are not required to file Form 990.
