JOHN HEWKO: Polio eradication is
a good investment. Although the global investment in a polio-free world exceeds
US$9 billion, an independent study published in the medical journal VACCINE
estimates that the net economic benefits to be $45 billion to $50 billion over
the next 20 years. Of course, the return on eradicating a disease forever and
preventing the suffering of countless children is impossible to
calculate.
