Message from the Governor

Dear Rotarians,

As the new year of 2013 unfolds, it is the halfway mark of the Rotary program year and my term of service as your District Governor.  I find myself surprised to be at this point so quickly.  The half way point is the time to revisit initial goals set at the beginning of the year and continue with rekindled enthusiasm.   For the first six months as your District Governor, I was focused on club visits.  I cannot underestimate their importance in furthering my appreciation of the accomplishments of our clubs and also recognizing the challenges of the clubs of our district.  For the next six months I look forward to having the time to attend club events.  Please keep me posted on special events your club has planned.

The first six months of 2013 will also be a time of training for the leadership for our district.

·         District Governor Elect Jack McAllister will attend the International Assembly in San Diego this month.

·         New Presidents Elect are registering for the President Elect Training Session to be held in Nashville March 22-23.

·         New club leadership can be developed at the Rotary Leadership Institute on February 2 in Lexington (register at www.hoa-rli.com)

·         Future Vision Grant Training Seminars for club certification will be announced shortly.  Every club must have members attend to be qualified to participate in foundation programs in 2013.14.

Remember that January is Rotary awareness month.  A simple thing that you can do to promote awareness is wear your Rotary pin every day.  Before the month is out, someone will ask you what it means.  Be sure you are prepared with an enthusiastic response.  It could be the first step to engaging a new member.

Peace Through Service,

Kathryn Hardman, Governor

Rotary Leadership Institute - February 2nd

This letter is a reminder that the next Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is scheduled for Saturday, February 2 at the Four Points Sheraton in Lexington. The session begins at 8:00 am and ends at 3:30 pm.

If you have need of lodging for Friday night February 1, please contact Martha Riddell (dmriddell@aol.com) as rooms may be available at the Four Points Sheraton.

RLI is geared towards those club members who are considered as future leaders of your club but is also appropriate for anyone who wants to know more about Rotary.  Any Rotarian in our District can attend RLI.

The challenge of many of our clubs is that of moving Club Members into being active Rotarians.

RLI does just that!

Rotarians who attend RLI become much stronger leaders in the club. They become active beyond the club.  RLI graduates attend interclub meetings, assemblies and conferences.

RLI helps to start their thirst for Rotary. For those that go on to become Club Presidents...when they attend President Elect Training, they are ready to take advantage.  They know what questions to ask and they learn a lot more than those attending without attending RLI

Sponsoring future club leaders to attend RLI is the best investment you can make in your club's future!

RLI consists of three one day parts.  First time participants attend Part I.  The second time they register for Part II and the third time Part III and graduation.

ARE YOU POSITIONING YOUR CLUB FOR FUTURE SUCCESS?

Outstanding clubs recruit up and coming club members to attend.

Clubs normally pay or reimburse the registration costs.

WE HAVE THE ABILITY FOR ATTENDEES TO REGISTER AND PAY ONLINE:

P.S.  We're encouraging you to recruit a future leader to represent your club at RLI and have them register by January 21!!!

RC Somerset-Pulaski and RC Somerset partner to benefit students

Club Presidents Ben Robertson and George Corder spoke to a group of over 200 students during the Access to Careers event held at Somerset Community College on Nov 14. The select group of students from the 4 local high schools toured the facilities of SCC and received information on classes offered, scholarship moneys and financial aid that is available. Each year both the Somerset Pulaski Morning Rotary Club and Somerset Rotary Club give scholarships to Somerset, Pulaski and Southwestern high school students based on high ethical standards and submitted essays.

RC Campbell County stays busy!

On Nov. 24 Campbell Co. Rotary assisted FOP Lodge 10 with their 5 C Run/Walk by handing out water at the turn. Profits from this are used by the police for their Kids 'n Christmas project to buy presents.

Dec. 9 CC held a dog contest in conjunction with Christmas in Alexandria, a month long community activity involving concerts, craft sales, children's tea, etc. Alexandria Mayor, the Alexandria Police Chief and a fireman from the Alexandria Fire Dept. judged dogs in 3 categories: Best Costume, Best Tricks, and Best Couple. In the kick off parade CC Rotary President, Arnd, walked his puppy to attract attendtion to the contest. Winston really strutted his stuff. Rotary then hosted a dinner/concert on Dec. 16. Profits from this were donated to the CARE Mission in Alexandria. Thanks to Gary Stewart, a member of the Florence Rotary, and talent he brought the concert was fantastic and enjoyed by all.

The CC Rotary was happy to induct Becky Timberlake into membership. Becky is a Development Specialist with Brighton Center, a community support organization.

RC Paris hosted several holiday programs

The Paris Rotary Club had several programs to foster Christmas spirit during the holiday season. On December 3rd the Rotary Club sponsored a community Christmas concert which featured local singers/choirs performing Christmas carols. At our regular meeting on December 5, Paris High School students treated us to a selection of Christmas music including a modified version of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" to showcase daily events in the life of a high school student. At the December 12th meeting, the Bourbon County High School choir sang a medley of songs that certainly put the spirit of Christmas in each Rotarian present. Of course, the Rotarians could not pass up the opportunity to sing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" to the students. With all the wonderful music presented by and to the Paris Rotary Club, Paris was ready for the Christmas season.

On Saturday 12/15 beginning at 11:00 the annual Wreaths Across America event was held at our Mill Springs National Memorial Cemetery in Nancy KY. Rotarians were on hand to prepare hot coffee, cider and other refreshments. Dr B.J. Parson spearheads this event each year for our club. Among the many veterans present, some from WWII, a large representation of our local school’s JRROTC members were present for the ceremony. Also in attendance were the Boy Scouts and Somerset Explorers. Wreaths Across America is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies on a specified Saturday in December at Arlington VA, as well as veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. Somerset Rotary is proud to participate in events remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms. This week of events is made possible by thousands of volunteers who organize local ceremonies, raise funds to sponsor wreaths, and participate in the events. We receive no government funding. The cost of their programs is paid by individual wreaths sponsors, corporate donors and volunteer truckers.

Letter from the District Governor

Dear Rotarians,

During this period of Thanksgiving we have so much to be grateful for in our lives and our district.  I have now had the pleasure of visiting 40 of our 41 clubs and I have been awestruck by so many things.  First of all, the commitment, compassion and uniqueness of each of our clubs and their unwavering service as they “do good” in their communities and the world is nothing less than inspiring.  We are blessed to have so many dedicated individuals in our clubs such as Past District Governor Leon Riggs who speaks passionately about the joys of his 50 years as a Rotarian and Gangadar Maddiwar with his many adventures as he travels the far reaches of our world alleviating suffering.  Participating in the auction hosted by the Paris and West Liberty clubs for West Liberty last week was a fantastic example of how our clubs also reach out to each other.  Not to mention that traveling throughout our district when it is decked out in the splendor of fall color is truly a joyful experience.

I hope the spirit of Thanksgiving is with you as you join friends and families to gather and give thanks.  If you have not had the experience of visiting another club in our district in a while, take the opportunity soon.  You will come back to your own club invigorated with new ideas and with some new friends.

Yours in Peace,

Kathryn Hardman
District Governor

RC Paris hosts Pie and Cake Auction

Paris Rotary Club’s Annual Pie and Cake Auction

Paris Rotary Club’s annual pie and cake auction was held Thursday evening November 1st as a fun way to raise money for the scholarship program.  The evening’s event was well attended with approximately seventy-five Rotarians and their guests in attendance.  Not only did the attendees bring their appetites, (dining on delicious crab legs, fresh shrimp, and oysters), they brought their checkbooks as well.  Close to $5900 was raised as the bidding for the cakes and pies became spirited with the highest auctioned cake bringing over $600.  The event netted out over $2900 for the scholarship program which is an increase of almost a $1000 from the same event last year.  Special guests included District Governor Kathyrn Hardman, and Past District Governor  John Adams, Christie, and of course Charlie.  A special thanks to Rotarians Tom Brannock and Bill T. McConnell for coordinating and conducting this special event.

As a way to continue to serve others, the Paris Rotary Club held a joint meeting with the West Liberty Rotary Club on Saturday, November 10.  The Paris Club brought items collected from members to be auctioned to benefit the Morgan Central Elementary School in West Liberty.

Polio Update

CONSIDER POLIO ERADICATION AN INVESTMENT

OCTOBER ROTARIAN

JOHN HEWKO: Polio eradication is a good investment. Although the global investment in a polio-free world exceeds US$9 billion, an independent study published in the medical journal VACCINE estimates that the net economic benefits to be $45 billion to $50 billion over the next 20 years. Of course, the return on eradicating a disease forever and preventing the suffering of countless children is impossible to calculate.

John Hewko has been the general secretary and CEO of RI and TRF since 2011.

Somerset-Pulaski County Rotary sets up Somerset Community College scholarship in memory of jack ford; awards inaugural scholarship

The Rotary Club of Somerset-Pulaski County recently funded and named a scholarship at Somerset Community College (SCC) in memory of John “Jack” Ford.

Ford passed away in 2011. He was a former CFO of Lifeline Home Health and worked as a CPA/controller for Somerset Food Service. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and served as a past district chairman for the Boy Scouts of America. Ford was an Eagle Scout and was named Rotarian of the Year in 2008.

The “Jack Ford Boy Scout Memorial Scholarship” at SCC was set up by the Rotary Club to award a $500 scholarship per semester. The scholarship recipient must be either a current or past member of the Boy Scouts Lake Cumberland District.

The first recipient of the Jack Ford Boy Scout Memorial Scholarship is Michael Crowhurst of Somerset. Crowhurst is a 2012 graduate of Somerset High School. He plans to pursue a career in engineering technology. Crowhurst was active in several clubs and organizations while in high school and was awarded Eagle Scout, Kentucky Colonel and Marine Corps League Good Citizenship Award recognitions in 2011. He is the son of Mike and Carolyn Crowhurst.

The Rotary Club of Somerset-Pulaski County was chartered in 1998. The club is actively involved in various community projects, including an International Dinner, building wheelchair ramps for individuals with disabilities, the Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic, Access to Careers day at SCC, clean water projects in various countries and the global initiative to eradicate polio. The Somerset-Pulaski County Rotary Club meets Thursday mornings at 7 a.m. at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Conference Room A.

Somerset Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education. SCC has campuses in Somerset and London, and centers in Clinton, McCreary, Casey, and Russell counties. For admission and program information, visit our website at somerset.kctcs.edu.
