Rotary Effort to Benefit Orphans

The Maysville Rotary Club (#3775), along with Rotary Clubs across Kentucky are in a contest to see how many new shoes can be donated for the Shoes for Orphan Souls program. The district governor, Jack McAllister, for the 6740 Eastern Kentucky District has challenged Kentucky’s Western Districts in a friendly competition to see which district will collect the most shoes, which will be donated to the Buckner International, a global Christian ministry. Buckner provides an array of services to meet the needs of children and families, including humanitarian aid support, volunteer mission opportunities, foster care and adoption services.

Maysville Rotary Club President Michael Parker said the program is another project Rotary is contributing to. “We just want to bring our fair share to help out,” Parker said.

Shoes for Orphan Souls is Buckner’s largest humanitarian aid project. Each Rotary member has been asked to donate one new pair of sneakers or athletic shoes, plus a new pair of socks. To help as many children as possible, Rotary members are asking help from the community and other civic organizations to meet the district governor’s challenge. Arrangements have been made with the Maysville-Mason County Chamber of Commerce to serve as a donation drop-off location, Parker said. Shoe sizes needed are from a youth size one to adult size 9. Donations can also be dropped off with any Rotary member, or on Tuesdays when the Maysville chapter holds its weekly meeting from 11:30 to 1 p.m., at the Rotary clubhouse on Bridge Street. Parker said shoes will be collected until November, at which time the shoes will be shipped to Buckner International. The shoes are distributed to children in the United States and 73 other countries. Since 1999, more than 2.5 million pairs of new shoes have been distributed.

RC Maysville community service project

Approximately 25 members of the Maysville Rotary and about a dozen Boy Scouts gave up their Saturday to brighten lives/yards of local residence.

After receiving a list of shut-ins or citizens with no means to do yard work, our local club set out to 'make their day'. Traveling with mulch, tools, flowers, and maps, the teams (mostly 4 - 5 as a team) reached their destinations.

After discussing what needed to be done, they began their work. Digging up old plants or remains of trees/bushes, the landscapes began taking on a new, fresh look. When all the project at a home was complete, the landscape was blooming with newly planted flowers. Each home also received a hanging basket.

Many of the residents came out to personally thank them, some even weeping with joy. It must be noted that the ones that got the most out of this project, were the Rotary members.

Approximately 12 homes received sprucing up. The club has decided that it was such a great success that we will do this again next year but plan to expand the number of homes.

RC Maysville - President Greg Hansen Receives Dochterman Award

Greg Hansen was installed as President of the Maysville Rotary Club at the Annual Awards Dinner. Along with the installation of President, other officers were also installed. Hansen is an Engineering Manager at Emerson Power & Transmission in Maysville. He has been with EPT for 12 years. Greg and his family moved here in 2000. He and his wife, Elaina, have 2 adult children: Britteny and Jerad.

Besides being very active in Rotary, Greg works tirelessly with the Scouts in our area. He is the current Shawnee District Chairman. He works with both the Cub Pack and the Boy Scout Troop locally. The Pack, under his leadership, ran a 'little kids' Bike Rodeo as part of the Zach Ruble Ride.  He was recently presented with the Cliff Dochterman Award by President Barb Campbell.  This high award honors an individual Rotarian who acts as a role model and renders distinguished and dedicated service to Scouting through active service, leadership or other exemplary contributions to the Scout Association of his/her home country.  To receive this award, the recipient must be a Rotarian in good standing.  Greg has been involved with the local scouts for many years and gives hours of his time with the Boy Scouts.

Greg is always ready to help out with the Rotary Club's activities, especially as Food Chairman, heading the concessions for both the Farm Equipment Sale and the Annual Horse Show. We are looking forward to his leadership in the coming year.

RC Maysville hosts Horse Show then hosts Hillbilly Horseshoes!

The Maysville Rotary Club had a very busy September!  On September 10th, we held our Annual Rotary Horse Show. This is always successful. Even though we had a light rain for a few minutes, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the participants and the Rotarians. We were excited to have DG John Adams, Christie, and little Charlie in attendance. Proceeds from the horse show help provide scholarships to 2 Mason County students who attend Maysville Community & Technical College.
On September 20th, we had as our guest speaker, D G John Adams. He brought us up-to-date on the changes in RI and reminded us of the great work Rotary International does worldwide. After the meeting, John was asked to toss out the first Hillbilly Horse Shoe, actually a toilet seat. John and DG Assistant Jackie Hopkins both took the challenge.

September 23-24, Maysville Rotary sponsored an activity in Maysville’s Annual "Pig Out in Maysville". This event is a fundraiser for our local Shriner’s Transportation Fund.  We chose to have Hillbilly Horse Shoes. This consists of plungers as stakes, and toilet seats for the horse shoes. This brought quite a lot of comments and participation. All of the proceeds from our activity will be donated to the local Oleika Shriner’s Club. The highlight of this came late in the evening on Saturday. Stober Drives participated in what they termed “World Championship Hillbilly Horseshoes”. They had employees from 10 countries involved in this playoff. The countries in attendance were: Switzerland, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore, England, China, Australia, and the US. No one actually knows who won but the Italians were claiming the title. Mr. Brend Stober, from Germany & president of Stober Drives even tossed the horse shoes. Can you imagine the tales they will have when they return home?
We also have inducted 3 new members: Gerry Schumacher, First State Bank of Ohio, Dawn Browning, director of KY Gateway Museum, and Whitney Evans, owner of Whitney’s Fine Jewelry.
Whew, what a busy month!!!!
Next will be our 3rd annual “Purses for a Purpose” purse sale. New or gently-used purses are donated by Rotarians and their friends for this sale. Last year, we had around 500 purses and made over $3200. We’re hoping for a bigger sale this year. If any Rotarians have purses that aren’t being used and would like to help us, email: jthomas@maysvilleky.net. All donations will be gladly accepted.

Maysville Rotary Club Makes History!

Maysville Rotary Club recently made history.  For the first time in the history of Maysville Rotary (est. 1923), a female, Barb Campbell, was elected President.  Barb is a very energetic member and will continue in the great work of our Past President, Xandy Stewart.  While Xandy was president, our club grew from 42 members to 54 members.  This was not an easy task but one of which Maysville Rotary is very proud.  President Barb is affiliated with Maysville Community and Technical College and is known for her organizational skills, enthusiasm, and leadership.
Our club sponsored a STEP (Short Term Exchange Program) student this year and that is another first for Maysville.  Whitney Allen, a graduate from Mason County 2011, was accepted and is spending 3 weeks in Ecuador.  When she returns, she will be bringing her Ecuador STEP friend to Maysville for a 3week visit.  The two will be speaking at our meeting on August 9th. Whitney will be entering Western KY University this fall, majoring in photo journalism.  She is the daughter of Dr. Peter & Katherine Egan.
Maysville Rotary is now in the midst of planning our Annual Rotary Horse Show to be held on Sept. 10 at the Germantown Fairgrounds.  This has been one of our annual fundraisers for over 40 years.  For more information about this show, call Doug Hendrickson at 606-564-6846 or Xandy Stewart at 606-407-4005.
